During World War I, Australia was a British dominion. When the Great War began, Prime Minister Andrew Fisher promised Britain 50,000 Australian solders to defend the mother country. Australia had the population of 4.97 million, and 168,000 Australians enlisted in 1914.

416,809 men enlisted, of which over 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.
